I have an 800 and a 1000. Using the boot only, I have experienced  no 
problems for at least 5 years (I check them each year). I am sure there are  some 
folks that have experienced problems.
 
If you feel the need to do something, use dielectric grease to fill  the 
connector cavity. Stuf shrinks, the grease does not. And it also will  address 
your other concern: The threads.
