I have hesitated for three days re the thread on installing PL259
connectors.

One of the prime directives of TT is RTFM (read the foolish manual) and do
what the manufacturer says. Like the on going thread on guying a self
supporting tower: they are self supporting for a reason and by design.

One of the benefits of installing a PL259 on .405 cable (all of the
different RG8 types) as designed, is the threads inside the plug give you a
mechanical connection to the outer insulation of the coaxial cable. Doing so
will keep the connector firmly attached to the cable. Part two of proper
installation is proper and judicious use of heat when you solder the four
holes.

QST's hatchet job of using butane torches last summer belies the fact that
with proper technique, torches can be safely and effectively used to make
strong electrical connections without damage to the cable. The same can be
said to using soldering guns and irons........all it takes is a little time
and practice.

As hams, we have developed a myriad of different ways of doing a number of
different tasks. That is the beauty of our hobby.

I want to state that I am not being critical of other solutions. I do want
to point out some of the limitations however.

Respectfully to others, I remain.................................
