    What you need is a steel snatch block; that is,  one that opens up so you 
can "snatch" the rope at any point instead of passing  the length of rope 
thru the pulley. I get mine from local rigging shops for  less than $20. They're 
Chinese but work fine. 
 
    The plastic pulleys from Champion Radio Products  are good for ropes but 
not steel; the sheave is too soft.
