The "spring coil" is a neat idea to couple RF into any other structure such as grounded towers, metal flag poles etc. Could be a fast way to get an antenna up-and-running in an emergency.

I saw this discussion somewhere before. From my faulty memory I think I
remember it being successful on a certain type of tree in the rain
forest, that had a lot more water content than any tree we have in North
America. And it did not work on any trees we have available here because
the water content was too low.
