time proven formula:

Make the radials 5% longer than the main radiator.

Once up,  fold back the radial ends to bring the antenna into resonance.
You don't have to cut them off... just fold them back and wrap them around
themselves.

There are more precise ways of calculating the lengths--but no way to
calculate the environmental variables which will affect the antenna, and
make the more precise calculation... wrong.   

Been doing it that way since ...  gak...  1959.
