My neighbor (W8LEP-sk) used rain down spouting for his vertical  for many years. He stood it on an electric insulator that was attached to a 4X4 post buried and it lasted for many years. He had to guy it several places of course but for the price it was a very cheap antenna. My son has now bought the home and has spent many years accidently digging up radials (grin)
