Hi,

I was looking for good UHF connectors 83-1SP as I read here to be a very
good one.

But seems actually this Amphenol 83-1SP use a LCP insulator instead of
Teflon.

Seems another part number, 083-822 is the one that have the Teflon
insulator.

And I know that will be introduce in Dayton the Amphenol /Connex 182120,
Silver body/Silver shell, Silver pin and teflon.

Below is the link to the Amphenol RF page for the two silver plated PL259
products in their catalog.

They do not mention the insulation / dielectric type at all. They do not
distinguish that the 83-1SP may have an Astro Plate shell with a silver
plated body.

I posted something about similar things on November 13, 2006 on Tower Talk.

I recall perhaps 35 years ago the ones that were all Astro Plate where you
had to scratch through it to the brass underneath to solder it properly.

A little later I saw silver-teflon ones available through Motorola (I did
not check if it was generally available elsewhere).

Now I have samples that carry the current p/n for all silver plated - Teflon
(or equivalent) 083-886-2050 (actually 83-886-2050 on the connector).

I believe other posts on TT mention the 83-1SP as having a silver plated
body and Astro Plated shell. I have one marked 83-886 that looks like that.

I also have another that looks all silver - Teflon with a p/n of
83-886-1000. Perhaps that was a special for someone as the plating is not as
white as the 2050.

I found a link to R & L currently stocking the 83-886-2050 at $9+ each. I
seem to be saving mine (for me) for some reason. as I have a quantity in
their packages in a box I purchased in Sept 96 at $2.59 each and never used.
I guess they must represent some important investment or something! I have
recently used some Dayton specials at the usual cheap price but as expected,
too much force from within by screwing in the coax causes the dielectric to
push out the face of the connector. Others with a marking of Made in USA and
a couple of initials (J & L or something?) as the mfr name from other
purchases there in the past faired better. I have soldered on at least a
hundred or two PL259 over the years.

So I think the current Amphenol 83-1SP is probably just fine. There is
little need for the all silver 83-886-2050 at least at HF. I heard that
brass Andrew N connectors at 800 or 900 MHz and higher power (hundreds of
Watts) created more noise at sites so we were instructed to only use all
silver plated versions. But then, what is the point as the UHF connector
barely works well at 450 MHz for other reasons. Even Motorola stopped using
them for their UHF base and mobile products many years ago. I guess if you
just HAVE to minimize dissimilar metal connections..

Does anyone have the Amphenol part # for their UHF/PL259 silver

connector.the one that comes in the little bag? The bag doesn't have the

number. I'm flat out and need to order some ASAP.
