Seems as if I remember Polyphaser advertising they were solid state. The 
ones I've had fail were all solid state with a tiny solid state device  
inside. No spark gap and no discharge tube that I could find. They were 
more like a bipolar diode and worked very well.
I've had several gas discharge devices apart and they sure looked different.
