Pipe vs tube

pipe is supplied in "nominal" sizes (e.g. 1" pipe has no dimension that 
happens to be an inch).. you have to go look up in tables what the 
actual dimensions are for pipe.. it deepends on material (steel,iron, 
copper, aluminum, etc.), the pressure rating (schedule 40,80, 160, etc.)

tubing, on the other hand, is dimensionally true.  If you order 2" 
tubing, it will be 2" OD.  You can recognize tubing because it will be 
specified as a diameter and a wall thickness (e.g. 2"x1/4" tubing)

There *is* tubing sold in odd dimensions, generally to match the OD of 
pipe (for handrails and scaffolding: Hollaender SpeedRail for instance)
