 How about stainless/copper MIG wire? At least it shouldn't rust. Maybe too expensive though.

Yup.  That way it can still maintain good electrical contact through the 
rollers. Rust doesn't work very well in that application.

It'll even rust laying on the floor, or out unprotected on a bench.
