Wow.   So I should return all these commercial two way radios
I deal with that have SO-239 connectors on them for use with
PL-259's to the manufacturers as being defective?

Icom, Kenwood, etc use them all the time, in their commercial products. 
Hardly
a small portion of the market.  Although I cannot say for sure about MA/Com,
pretty much any other LMR manufacturer other than Motorola uses them still.

##  Do they use QUALITY  SO-239's  on the back ends of these radio's ? 
I have yet to see a quality SO-239 on the back of any ham gear.  You would think
for the megabuck price tag on expensive ham gear,  you would get a real  silver
plated one..with teflon dielectric SO-239 chassis female....with  4 x SS screws
used. 

## crimped connectors are used to save labour costs.  Have you got any idea how long it
takes to assemble 200-300 type N and   BNC connectors?  All that stuff is crimped in any
telco, or any where else that installs them in large quantity. And no, you won't find any 
UHF connector's  anywhere.
