HI Alan,

I have a UST 589 myself..
The HDX-689 is a custom tower that (with reference to the 589) has one section larger than the 589 lower/lowest section and one section less top section..
Said another way. if you look at the size of the 589 bottom section, you will see that it is ~30 5/8" across one side.. and the TOP section measure ~15"..?
The 689 bottom section measures ~35 5/8" and the TOP section measures 18".

## You almost got it right. The top section on the 689 is section #6....and is indeed 18" across. The bottom section on the 689 is section #10,
and is 37 1/8" wide. [not 35 5/8"] Put another way, the 689 uses sections 6-10. The 589 uses sections 5-9 The 489 uses sections 4-8.
The 5106 [106'] uses sections 5-10. The 772 uses sections 7-10 [21 5/8" top]

The larger sections of the 689 is what gives it the extra wind load capacity as well as the weight.? The 589 is just under 2500#..?? and IF I remember correctly, the 689 weighs over 3500#..?

## I think the 589 weighs 2440 lbs.

## I believe the current production 689 weighs 3250 lbs lbs, including motor drive. [ that current production bottom section #10 weighs 1006 lbs ! ]
I have the origional Z braced 689. The crane op had the scale on it when he unloaded it.. and it was dead on 5000 lbs ! Only thing
extra on the tower was the small 45 lb prop pitch + rotor plate. Crane op said he could have jerked it ever so slightly, which would give a higher,
false reading. [the scale he used would record the highest weight, even when put onto blocks. You have to manually re-set the scale to zero] .
The trucking outfit who delivered it, had driven over scales, [he had extra stuff on the trailer besides the tower]... and factored in the weight of
trailer and extra stuff, and said it was well over 4000 lbs. The old UST structural analysis sez the foundation is designed to handle
a... " structure weight of 4.41 kips" which I assume means 4410 lbs. New spec sez 3.56 kips = 3560 lbs. The bottom 6' 10" of each
of my 3 x legs has also been re-enforced with a tube slid into it, and welded. My bottom section has legs that are 1/2" thick [ for the
1st 6' 10"] The balance is .276" thick [sched 80]. The upper sections also have their lower legs re-enforced, and also are Z braced.

## That Z bracing on the older versions adds a lot of weight.

## Rick is correct. The 689 is just a 5106 [ 106' tower with a 15" top] minus the top section. The model 772 is just the 5106 - the top 2 x sections.
If you remove the top section of a 689 you end up with a 772. If the WX sucks... hit the switch, and it's all down in < 4 mins.
