How much power are you running when you find your balun warm? Balun
dissipation occurs when it doesn't have sufficiently high common
mode impedence at the frequency of use. See Kevin Schmidt's (W9CF) paper on
the effects of balun location and needed impedence.

>From all I've read 4:1 baluns aren't particularly useful. A good choke balun
is more likely what you need. This is just as effective and a lot simpler to
implement than a balanced tuner.
