The average vertical has very little low radiation angle, unless next to 
salt water which fills in the pseudo Brewster angle.   I think most of the 
time you are better off with a horizontal antenna .

A GOOD vertical antenna is perhaps the easiest way to get the low radiation
angle you would like for DX'ing.
