The gain of an inverted L  is usually in the direction opposite to the 
loading wire direction.  If you are "sloping" your wire NE to be louder into 
Europe, you may want to re-evaluate this antenna.   At P40A I used a wire 
length of 130 feed and I fed it directly for a few years.  Later I added a 
hairpin coil to better match the impedance, but it was not that necessary. 
I would also try to get your wire further from the tower to minimize 
coupling.  For a while I used a 130' vertical wire hung from a guy wire 
about 50' away from the tower and it worked great.  You may also want to 
consider just laying the radials on the ground, it requires no tuning and 
they are less of an obstruction.

I would like some thought on the antenna that I am planning to put up 
shortly.
It will be an inverted L, total length 160 feet 100 feet vertcal, 3 feet 
away
from the tower and the rest sloping NE. The base will be about 10 feet off 
the
ground, and I will use 4 elevated radials. I will feed the base of the 
antenna
through a common mode choke to a kw-type tuner, before running the coax to 
the
shack....
