I know I'm in the minority here, but I've always preferred  athletic shoes 
or sneakers or whatever you want to call them.  I like to  "feel" the tower 
under my feet and  they allow me to do that.  In  addition I have really 
high arches so the "push" of the tower rung against my  arch is not an issue 
and almost is like a massage.  I know, kinda  strange.
