McMaster Carr has a variety of fiberglass rods in various grades.  May 
be able to find stuff cheaper elsewhere.

do you need a solid rod, or is a tube ok?

Does it need to be fiberglass?  Would phenolic/linen work, or something 
like ABS or Acetal (Delrin)?
