You're doing this for HFTA, right?  Last I heard about this, the formats 
of the Microdem data and/or its extraction process have changed over the 
years that HFTA has been using them. HFTA author, Dean Straw, has done 
some talks about using HFTA, including the Microdem process, most 
recently in a WebEx for PVRC. In addition, ARRL has done their best to 
keep up with the changes, and I remember Dean pointing us to stuff on 
the ARRL website.  I think you can find a recording of the WebEx on the 
PVRC website.
