Andy,
You would never use a relay at the element tip. The element can be
lengthened by adding inductance or shortened by adding capacitance in series
but that would be done at the feed point or the center of the element. The
hair pin is used for converting the antenna Z to match the 50 ohm line plus
it provides a static drain for the driven element. I have seen articles on
doing what you are wanting to do but don't remember where. Maybe ARRL
Antenna Handbooks or W6SAI Antenna Book. Do some research, there is info out
there you just need to find it. BTW, you don't have to use a coil or cap,
just adding a little wire in the form of linear loading will do the trick.
Good luck & 73. Ron W8RJL

Hi to all, looking for a little guidance with a 402ba 2el 40 mtr yagi. As
most people know it suffers from narrow bandwidth which can be a pain if you
want to cover cw/ssb segments of the band. I having been thinking of
modifying it for such by using relays on the driven and reflector elements
for full band coverage. It uses a hairpin match and was wondering if this
might be the best place for the relays rather than on the element tips. Any
thoughts or ideas on the best approach.
