Per EZNEC+ 5.0.59:

80M vertical over "real/high accuracy" average (0.005, 13) ground

1 radial 0.5' above ground gain -2.07 dBi "front" and -5.59 dBi "back"	

1 radial 10.0' above ground gain -0.16 dBi "front" and -3.71 dBi "back"

So, yes there is a difference in gain between "front" and "back" (toward the
radial and away from it).

Looks like if you are going to have only 1 radial you'll want to elevate it.
