Or, maybe we should push the manufacturers to go away from the legacy 
potentiometer feedback pot?

There's all manner of inexpensive optical and/or hall effect encoders 
are readily available now.  And, they're potentially really, really 
rugged (think of the crank position sensor in an automobile)

These days, it is trivial, if not cheaper, to have a microcontroller to 
"close the loop" rather than relying on comparing two voltages and 
driving relays.


I suppose, for all the popular inexpensive (cheap) rotors out there, the 
development costs have long since been recovered, and as for many things 
sold to hams, the volume isn't there to justify redesign.  How many 
*new* installations of rotors are there?  (as opposed to replacements).
