I have used both the next size up tubing as outer joiners as well is next size down but "double wall" thickness successfully. 2 bolts through each one and you are good. Lots of my home brew beams have splices. Some at the center and some in "thirds". Visually, the ID method looks better when they are in thirds. Ed N1UR
