[TowerTalk] planes and towers

During WW2, my uncle lived on a farm about a mile off the end of a runway of Chanute Air Force Field at Rantoul. Il. One morning some high ranking officers came to his house and were looking up at some walnut trees around his house.
When my uncle asked them what they were looking for, they said that a B-17 landed last night with some walnut branches on it's wing.

before I put up my first tower 30 years ago I was warned about just such things in this area. so I called the local base and gave the operations officer my coordinates and told him the tower would be up the next weekend. sure enough a flight of A-10's came through, did a few circles, and went on their business. they were regular visitors until the local wing was upgraded, now I never see their replacements. but it sure was interesting to be able to wave at the pilots as they circled you on the tower. more recently we had a c-130 coming through usually late in the evening, he scares me because he comes right over a small ridge and you can barely hear him before he is right on top of you... I have never gotten any of the bases that were suggested as sources to admit it was one of theirs, but after a few calls it seemed to go away... I didn't really want to stop them, I just wanted to make sure they knew there was a 190' tower on their normal path.

Looking at the W9ZUC incident and the clip below it about the duster/tower made me think back about several incidents with mine. I live directly in a MOA (military operating area) and 20 or so years ago maybe more a F4 blew over my tower while I was working at the top exceeding the speed of sound. He put a sonic boom on me which i would have jumped off if i had not been securely fastened to the tower. Normally it is illegal to create a sonic boom over the continental US but they had a waiver in order to re-certify the F4's before giving them to the national guard. this turned out to be pretty regular for the next several months. Another time I was up at daylight standing on my porch looking at my 140' tower which was hidden in fog from about 50 ft and up when i could hear helicopters coming my way. I could tell that they were heading right at my tower. They were flying right at the bottom edge of the fog. They came into my view a couple of hundred ft from the tower. One broke left; the other went right. I thought was going to witness a big one for a minute! Scary! 73's Cort K4WI_______________________________________________
