Back in 1993, I bought a Weller soldering station brand new in a box.  It was a new "ESD series" with a grounded tip.  It's brown in color, not the typical greenish color.  It has a digital readout and is temperature adjustable.   In my solder training courses, the instructors always said to melt some solder on the tip (don't wipe it off) if you are going to keep it on for a long time and not use it.  I also do that if I am going to turn off the iron.  Melt some solder, then turn it off, and let the solder harden on the tip.  That will keep the tip from oxidizing to the point of having to file it to get the tip to accept solder.   Tom, N2SR

Good question.  A Metcal factory rep told me that the secret to long
life for Metcal tips is to use almost no water on the sponge.
If fact, better to wipe the tip with a dry paper towel.  If you
hear a sizzling sound when you clean the tip, you are using way
too much water and causing a severe thermal transient that will
over time if done repeatedly destroy the tip.  This failure
mechanism is specific to Metcal.  AFAIK, you can dunk Weller tips
in water all day long without damage.

Simply leaving the tip on 24/7 (not recommended) gradually erodes
the metal on the tip the same way it does on any iron.

In normal use, the tips last about the same as any other iron.
The lower temperature ones last longer.
