One caution about lifting critical loads with a brake winch is that they
might deteriorate with exposure. At least that happened 5+ years out
for four I installed on a steel barge for spud and ramp lifters exposed
to WX 365/24. Otherwise, the D-L winch is a great product. A worm gear
winch, properly designed, will not freewheel under load.
I use an inverted black plastic document storage box, cut to fit over my
winches so they aren't in the weather except when in use. A bungee
keeps the wind from blowing them off.
