Yes, insulated elements are much easier and more accurate to model. I also
try to avoid having very short segments in my NEC2 model. Insulated
elements also make it easy to model the boom for interaction if there are
multiple antennas on different rotators. All of my beams have insulated
elements!

I conclude that those who swear by insulated elements do so to not have to
swear at plates in the modeling.
