AFAIK there is not much info available on servicing the Yaesu rotors (the 
800, 1000, and 2800 are all very similar, as are their controllers). 
Attached is what limited information I have on servicing these rotors. Be 
careful when you attempt your repair, as I have heard that Yaesu does not 
service them!

Frist off, one of the Yaesu manuals is on the BAMA site, and for all intents 
and purposes the manuals are interchangeable. The manual contains info on 
both the controller and the rotor, and there are exploded drawings of all.

As to bench testing, of course a Yaesu controller is the easiest and will 
allow you to display the azimuth of the motor. Absent that, you can put + 
or - 12V DC across pins 4 and 5 and rotate it CW or CCW. The motor turns 
faster with more DC voltage, and I think you can throw as much as 18 to 24 
at it. I wouldn't go higher than that. Also, Pins 1, 2, 3 go to a 500 ohm 
resistor strip which is inside the motor (there is a similar 500 ohm 
potentiometer inside the controller (Pin 2 is the wiper). This forms a 
voltage divider which derives the azimuth setting of the motor, and displays 
it on the controller. It is a pretty basic circuit, which Yaesu has made 
ungodly complex with the design of the controller!

As many of you know, I'm beginning the planning phase of my first serious
tower project and am hoping for help from the list. (The result from my
first question: The site appears to be 250' or so from the shack, away from
house-generated noise, away from falling tree danger and danger of falling
on the house, and at an esthetic location but within reasonable reach of
the shack.) Here is  my next question:

I'm lucky enough to have a (working?) used Yaesu G-2800SDX that was mounted
for a number of years and stored after that for a while by the person I
bought it from. I'm planning on plugging it in on the bench and see if it
moves correctly when the box is manipulated.

I live in Minnesota with some of the widest yearly temperature swings in
North America. I'm thinking of pulling apart, cleaning, and re-greasing the
motor head before putting it up.

Advice on "how to" disassembly, "what with" grease, and "how to" bench test
would be highly appreciated!
