Yes, many of the posts annoy me too, BUT:
Safety and the representations of such in what is supposed to be a 
widely knowledgeable and respected journal can affect many.
As you point out, most hams are not professional climbers. They resort 
to examples on safety. A cover photo has much more impact than a safety 
article

This has a great deal to do with this reflector. Although many messages 
are a platform for complaint, many of the messages are not useless. It's 
too bad, most of those average hams are probably unaware that this 
reflector and the bulk of safety knowledge it contains, even exists.

It matters not, whether the photo was staged. We know the difference, 
but very few seeing the photo are even aware of the dangers. What 
matters is the example(s) it shows.  That photo and its examples will be 
seen by hundreds of thousands of hams, prospective hams, and the public, 
giving them the impression that "This is the Way it's done". At one 
time, it really was the way it was done.  We climbed with only a safety 
belt and a lanyard for safety. Sometimes, with even less  We did it, 
survived, and learned, often by example.

Too often "staged" photos ignore reality in favor of composition and the 
impact of the presentation. Been there, done that.

Perhaps, these reflectors/news groups are the place for those in the 
know, to vent when they see many unsafe practices presented as "the way 
it's done", rather than the way it should be done. Maybe, just maybe it 
will cause enough stir to cause someone, or even a few to write well 
thought out letters to cause some change.
