It's important to remember that SWR is NOT an indication of antenna 
performance. It ONLY indicates a match to the feedline as measured in 
the shack.  It does not tell us that the antenna has gain, nor does it 
tell us how much gain! Antenna gain and directivity is established by 
length and spacing of parasitic element(s) AS A FRACTION OF A 
WAVELENGTH.  Yes, length and spacing affect feedpoint Z, but once the 
antenna is designed and built for gain, we tune the matching element (or 
vary the length of the driven element) to optimize the match.
