Bob, a local ham had the same issue on his  F12  5BA. 
He used  scrap lexan, from local plastic shop, for the
spacers.   Then its UV proof..and super strong. 
F12 also has a procedure in the book, array of light,
depicting how they are made, and installed.  Holes drilled,
an  SS  hose clamps used to keep the spacers fixed in place. 
Dunno why F12  did not do it right to begin with.  The longer  els
would bang into the shorter ones.
