Staking nuts refers to the practice of creating a notch in the nit and corresponding mating surface with a cold chisel and hammer. The will prevent the nut from rotating. Very common in critical assemblies.

We do this on the castle nuts of AR-15sto prevent them from walking out and the buffer tube becoming loose for example.
