I have a number of spools of AWG40 wire in copper and aluminum. That's
about 3 mil diameter. (AWG 10= 100 mil, AWG30=10 mil, etc.)
I have no doubt one can get arbitrarily long pieces of wire 1 mil in
diameter these days.
Of course, 1 mil is small enough that you can't really see it at any
distance more than a few inches. It's a pain to work with unless you
have magnification. Standard visual acuity tests are set to 1 arc
minute (that's the size of the gap between the arms of the E on an eye
chart at standard distance). 1 arc min is about 0.3 milliradian (or a
distance of 30 cm at a distance of 1 km), or here, 3.44 inches for 1 mil
