The local water utility commissioned a study many years ago to determine
what the best color paint is for their water tanks/towers to minimize
visibility.  They came up with a color named "Philadelphia Gray".  It's
basically the color of a mid-day cloudy sky.

In contrast (pun intended), the Air Force did a study to determine what the
best color(s) are to paint communication towers to make them the
most-visible during the day.  At night, obstruction lighting makes them
stand out; the goal was to determine what color(s) to paint towers for
maximum daytime visibility.  The FAA-standard "aviation orange" and
"aviation white" alternating color bands faired poorly.  The best color:
matte black.
