The ABOK is a great reference, but not the easiest to follow

What I believe he did wasn’t technically a knot ( I showed him a drawing)
Make a bight in your line, and pass the bight through a ring, and the spread the two legs of the bight, and pass over the ring. Effectively the line makes a wrap around the ring, but the line never crosses itself. Fairly normal way of putting clips on a flag halyard
