And for what the big box stores don't have, McMaster-Carr will deliver 
it UPS the next day, at least in the US.

It's available painted, bare, galvanized, steel, aluminum, and 
fiberglass, in a myriad of sizes and shapes that are mostly compatible 
with each other.

I think of it as an Erector Set for grownups.

If you're working with "round tubes" and need to connect them securely, 
there's products for scaffolding that work nicely.

I know them as Cheeseborough clamps, but I suspect that's a specific 
tradename.

They're used in theatrical rigging, and are available to fit all sizes 
of pipe and tube.

The simple ones are about $5 each, and you could probably buy them used 
from a rigging supply place.
