I think the heater type Jim is referring to is an infra-red radiation
heater. They are not designed to work efficiently via conduction, or
convection. I have one also sold by Costco, and put on display as soon as
the cold weather hits, where when you walk by, you instantly feel the
infra-red hit you in the face. It is very effective at heating someone
sitting in a chair, but the room the heater is in remains pretty cold.

Hi Rick,

I've had the $15 passive radiators for years. They only work by convection,
and it takes a LONG time to make the operating position warm because it's
heating the entire room, especially the high ceilings in my house and shack.
It's expensive to heat all of that volume, and I only need it warm by me.
This unit does that VERY quickly (in a few minutes), after which I can stop
buying more joules from PG&E.

The fan in this particular unit is fairly quiet, at least as quiet as my
KPA1500 on position 1. And any time I'm operating, I'm wearing headphones,
so stuff that's this quiet doesn't matter.
