Steve's criteria is sage & valid.    Know what to look for in assessing wire rope condition.

Suggestions if you are building your own cable assys...

- Buy US or reputable mfg. wire rope.   Avoid the Chinese stuff.
- Use copper crimp sleeves.
- Use a "go - no go" gauge to check your finished crimps.
- If you are tempted to upgrade to stainless rope, be aware that it's typically not rated for the same working loads.
- Re-cabling is an excellent time to refurbish your pulley bearings.
