I had the same problem last year. It got so bad that the manual encoder 
really didn't work at all. Sent the unit back to HyGain and they replaced 
the encoder. Very reasonable cost and then they also updated the firmware to 
the latest. You could probably replace the encoder yourself.

My DCU-3 controller has the last/latest software, v1A, released in 2014.

While I like the box and use the programmed headings much of the time, I
am frustrated by the manual position-setting encoder. It takes many,
many turns in order to get to where you want to go.

Is there a fix or workaround to make that more manageable?  I hope so!
