Ah !  i have done this and i will add with great success, AND my mast
was 1/2" Chromoly 2" od and obviously then 1" id after drilling the hole
i didn't use a bolt but rather a 1/2"  spring pin or roll pin and have
NEVER looked back, drifted that pin into place and it has held brutally
with both a long 46' boom 6L Telrex and my 4L SteppIR ..  on several
occasion i have had reason to separate the mast from the rotor and using
a straight punch pushing the roll pin on out was a no real brainer, then
of course after the work was done just used the smooth end of the pin
and drifted it back into place..
