You can rent them. Last time I did this (10 yrs) ago it was like 
$40/day. My gas line has a wire wrapped around it to facilitate 
detection.  They have a pod that puts a tone on a wire, and the detector 
(basically a metal detector) will find it.

Or call the "dig alert" and they come out and do it (for a subsidized fee)
