How exactly are these bearings used?   I would advise against using any
sealed or open bearing unless designed for outdoor use.

For bearings in the environment, one should use either stainless or chrome
coated steel bearings.  The race should be stainless or chrome plated as
well.
Seals weather crack. 

If you look at any of the commercial mast thrust bearings, they are not
sealed, but are made either stainless or chrome coated steel.
