[TowerTalk] How much can an AB-577 carry?

Pete,
For FD 3rd time we will have a 2el homebrew trapless 20m mono yagi at 50ft,
and a 3el hygain 15m Longjohn trapless mono yagi at 35ft. Also at 50ft a half wave dipole for 80m.
The issue of QST featuring FD had a nice pic of our AB-577 set up last year.
Anyway, no problems with that setup so far for us.
I think the key is will it be used for a weekend or are you talking about a home setup where it will be left up year round.
I have 2 AB-577s and I'm going to put one up for contest season. I will only put a C3SS on top of that for that application.

Another consideration, what is the condition of the parts of the AB-577? These were made in the late 60s. A typical fail point in wind are the clamps that connect the mast sections together. You only need one to let go, and that mast/tower is coming down. I was fortunate to find a double replacement set from Ontario Surplus a couple years ago.
Hope this helps,
73 Darrell AB2E

Crimey, and this is an engineer who did computational structural
analyses of the masts on America's Cup boats. I think what this is
probably telling me is that I can safely put a small 6M yagi on top of
my C-3, so long as I'm attentive to guy tightness.
