Thanks to all that replied: I figured out the issue. For those 
interested, I essentially the sign and magnitude of the error between 
the indicated direction and the actual direction (call it 30 deg west), 
then set the CW and CCW limits to 150 deg. That's it! The knob is no 
longer calibrated with the factory scale, but that doesn't matter so 
much since the display shows the commanded direction.
