Actually started that method when I was 15 years old. Novice license. Of course no money. Parents gave me $0.00 towards ham radio, except my mother had the sense of buying me a Weller 8200/8400 gun which I still have and use today. I think she was afraid I’d burn the place down or poison everyone with fumes. I never found out how she knew about the soldering gun. She was totally non technical🙄😀
