Hi Ed,

You cited the most important reason in the paragraph above -- vertically 
polarized antennas are strongly dependent on good soil to work well, 
horizontal antennas don't care what the soil is, they only care about 
height. Poor soil is a VERY good reason to NOT bother with any 
vertically polarized antenna.
