There's been great advice already, including this. I'll add more. Buy 
and study N6BT's self-published "Array Of Light," which debunks a lot of 
the advertising gobbledygook about antennas. Tom is the designer of the 
excellent vintage Force 12 line of antennas. Great engineer and 
designer, great guy, not a great businessman, so that company is long 
gone. Someone will remind me of the company that has taken over his 
designs.

At home, in a dense redwood forest, it took me three years to find a 
spot to turn SteppIR's little 3-el with straight elements. It's been an 
excellent performer since 2008. Unfortunately, they have shut down their 
ham biz, but another company has been selling that sort of design for 
many years, and I see great reports.

Our contesting team has owned three of his smallest yagi, the C3SS, and 
used them extensively on our portable expeditions to light up rare 
counties in 7QP and CQP, and on Field Day.
