"If you connect a wire from any point on the dipole to ground, current 
will flow."

That corrects the typo. I wanted to add that one way to visualize things 
is to employ the image-current model that antenna analysis programs use. 
All wires above ground have an image below ground. The current in the 
image of a horizontal wire is out of phase with that in the wire above 
ground while current for a vertical wire is in phase. When you connect a 
wire to ground, you're connecting it to its image.
