That brought to mind the AC/DC power rivalry of the late 1800s. George 
Westinghouse, with a new AC power transmission system, went up against 
Thomas Edison and his original DC system. I seem to recall that one of 
the early arguments against AC was that it couldn't possibly deliver 
power since it would be returned when the current changed direction. I 
couldn't find a reference to that, but I thought I had read that DC was 
still used in parts of New York City well into the 20th century. Turns 
out that DC was ended there only in 2007!
