Reinventing the wheel

Help!!

Does someone out there have the necessary formulas for computing beam
headings based upon latitude/longtidue?  I would like to put this into
TR, but haven't taken the time to find them (or to develop them myself).

Also, I would like a routine to compute the distance between grid squares
(the 6 digit kind).  

I would like them in easy to understand form - either with equations
with descriptions of the variables, or well documented source code.

Any help would be appreciated and would help get these features added 
in the next release.
