PACKET PORT PROBLEM

Having just installed TR successfully I decided to try the packet interface:
-no dice! The TNC does not seem to talk with TR. The only indication of
"life" I get is if I switch the TNC off and on again while the Packet screen
is up; I then see the following [:x] - brackets not included. The :x is
all that ever appears in the Packet window, the keyboard being apparently dead.

I have made sure that I am using the correct baud, parity etc. The same
port works perfectly using other Packet terminal programmes such as TPK.

The following is the gear involved:

H.F. Radio: Omni VI
Computer: 486 DX/33 with recently added I/O card to provide an
extra serial port and parallel port (for the keying line)
TNC: MFJ 1270 (modified to 1278)
VHF Radio: Not connected at present, but presumably this should not
interfere with communication bertween computer and TNC.

All suggestions gratefully received! ..73 .. Brian .. VE7QH ..
